Second fire in less than a month at Hastings landfill

HASTINGS, Neb. -- A fire in a landfill in Hastings has caused the use of a backup tarp set.
According to the City of Hastings, members of the Hastings Rural Fire Department and Hastings Solid Waste Landfill employees responded to a fire at the landfill early Tuesday morning.
According to reports, the fire was reported by a passing motorist around 1:00 am.
Hastings Rural Fire Department crews sprayed the surrounding area to prevent the fire from spreading.
Officials said the fire destroyed the tarps that served as Alternate Daily Cover and is now using its backup tarp set.
This is the second tarp set destroyed by a fire in less than a month. The landfill also had a fire on Aug. 15.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but officials are warning locals to be aware of how they are disposing flammable items such as batteries and vape pens.
