Lincoln teen charged as adult in brother's homicide on Christmas Eve
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Lincoln teen accused of fatally shooting his brother on Christmas Eve was charged as an adult on Thursday.
Kentrail McDaniel, 16, is facing charges of manslaughter, a class 2A felony, and use of a firearm to commit a felony, a class 1C felony, in Lancaster County Court. He faces up to 70 years in prison if found guilty on both counts.
On Tuesday around 12:30 a.m., Lincoln Police were called to the Bridgeport Apartments, near 14th Street and Hilltop Road, on a report of gunshots.
Arriving officers found 20-year-old Johnathan McCray, of Lincoln outside the apartment suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a Lincoln hospital where he later died.
While at the hospital, officers identified the shooting suspect as McDaniel and took him into custody in the parking lot.
McDaniel agreed to speak with investigators and stated he had recently been the victim of an assault and was staying with his brother for his safety, according to court documents.
During the investigation, officers learned that the two brothers had arrived at their mother’s apartment together but in separate vehicles. As McDaniel was walking toward the apartment complex, he said he noticed a masked figure heading toward him, not realizing it was his brother, and started firing his weapon from his hip.
According to the arrest affidavit, McDaniel fired 15 rounds from an assault rife.
McDaniel said he thought his brother was going to wait in the vehicle while he went inside the apartment to drop off some vehicle keys for his mother.
McDaniel told investigators he was in possession of an assault rifle because he feared for his safety, documents allege.
LPD said McCray was also in possession of a firearm. LPD has possession of the assault rifle used in the shooting.
McDaniel was arraigned in Lancaster County Court and had his bond set at 10% of $100,000.
