Cheyenne County Fair wraps up with mud bowl derby
SIDNEY -- Afternoon rains couldn't stop the demolition derby Saturday, the closing event of the 2024 Cheyenne County Fair.
The Rumble on the Rails Demolition Derby was scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Saturday at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds. Leading up to that time, the area experienced storm and flash flood warnings in the area. In addition, event organizers were battling no power and no certain time it would return.
Drivers decided to put on a show regardless of conditions, throwing mud and spinning tires to the event conclusion.
The demolition derby was delayed until 8:35 p.m. when the gates were opened. Event organizers reported selling 300 additional tickets that night.
Wheat Belt Public Power District restored power just as drivers were lined up to start the contest.
The event concluded a muddy two hours later, including the lawnmower races.
Prior to the Saturday night's rain delay, the day's activities started with the Take Back 5K Obstacle Course starting at Legion Park and finishing at the Fair Grounds. The 4-H Livestock Sale also started at 9 a.m., with the 4-H Appreciation Lunch at noon.
The afternoon schedule included the "Flying Debris" show, Twisted Rich Hypnosis, and Adrenaline Alley.
Friday was highlighted with a double-feature night show of David Nail and guest Dylan Wheeler.
Winners of the beef raffle include: Jan Virgil, Tony Balandran, Dean Gipfert and Brian Crow. All winners will be notified and given additional information about the processing. The Cheyenne County Fair Board offered four chances to win a 1/4 beef with processing included. Tickets were $25 each.
