Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert made it official today.

She wants a five-year 200 million dollar, vote-of-the-people bond issue to fix the city's broken streets on the May primary ballot.

Her plan would find property taxes on an average Omaha home jumping 61 dollars a year. Her proposal now goes to the city council which must give its approval. A public hearing on the plan is set for February 4th.

The city's road problems are no secret, resulting in record numbers of potholes the last few years.

Stothert says the city's "rapidly deteriorating" streets require $75 million a year to fix and right now the city is only spending $41 million a year.

The mayor says she believes citizens should vote on major projects such as this one which is why she opposes raising the wheel tax to pay for it.

Increasing the sales tax would take approval of the State Legislature and Stothert says she's not sure that would happen.
