Lawmaker: Elected officials should not be drawing their own district maps

At least one state lawmaker wants voters to change the way Nebraska's political maps are drawn.
Last fall the heavily Republican Legislature carved out a few new controversial voting districts including Omaha's Second Congressional District, which now arguably favors incumbent GOP Congressman Don Bacon even more than it did.
Omaha State Sen. Megan Hunt says the current system if ripe for abuse. "But for decades now, Nebraska's redistricting process has been tainted by partisan interests. That's because there is something fundamentally undemocratic about having elected officials draw their own boundaries."
Hunt's plan would turn the initial map-making over to a 9-member independent commission, which would present maps to the Legislature for final approval.
No one spoke against the measure but Governor Pete Ricketts has long opposed the idea.
By the way it will be 10 years before any new maps are redrawn.
