OMAHA -- Nearly two dozen Omaha families were asked to leave their homes in late January due to hazardous code and permit violations. Now, the community is helping one non-profit to rehome them.

"They do matter and people do care, and this is a reminder of that," said Mike Honacek, president of Together Omaha.

Together Omaha is a non-profit that prevents homelessness. After moving those displaced residents into a hotel, they're now helping them move into new apartments.

This month, the Greater Omaha Packing Foundation donated $20,000 to support that. The donors encourage others to also help out. Together Omaha suggested the amount of $20,000, to keep the 19 displaced families in a home for 30 days. Their total goal is $80,000, and they're at $60,000 right now.

“Community involvement has always been a substantial part of who we are,” shares Henry Davis, CEO of Greater Omaha.

Together Omaha's president and CEO Mike Honacek said the biggest challenge to addressing homelessness in Omaha is the "math" to create affordable housing.

You can donate on Together-Omaha.org. Designate "25th and Jones" to ensure funds are restricted for that purpose.

“I just wish things like this didn’t have to happen,” Honacek said.
