NSP: 2 children hurt and 1 arrested after crash in north Omaha

(OMAHA, NEB.) — The Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after the suspect fled a traffic stop and caused a crash that injured 2 children in Omaha.
Friday morning, a trooper saw a car with expired license plates traveling on Highway 75 in Omaha, near Ames Avenue. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect accelerated and ran a red light.
After a few blocks, the car ran another red light, and struck a vehicle, that collided with a third vehicle. The driver attempted to use his vehicle to flee again, but the vehicle was not useable.
According to the police, the driver refused to exit the vehicle, which lead to officers deploying pepper balls. The driver exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident.
A handgun was located on the driver’s person as he was being taken into custody.
The police found 2 children in the car, that were transported to UNMC with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither child, both two-years-old, was in a car seat.
The driver of the car, was 34-year-old Martel Toles, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, he was also transported to UNMC with injuries suffered in the crash.
Toles has an outstanding warrant from Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
The Omaha Police Department is investigating the crash.
