OPD: Douglas County Sheriff's candidate cited for driving 107 mph

A sheriff's candidate in Douglas County was ticketed for allegedly driving 107 mph in a 65 mph zone in Omaha Saturday morning.

OMAHA, Neb. - A sheriff's candidate in Douglas County was ticketed for allegedly driving 107 mph in a 65 mph zone in Omaha Saturday morning.

According to Omaha Police, 55-year-old George Merithew was cited around 9:00 a.m. on Interstate 80 near 42nd Street after an officer spotted him speeding near 50th Street.

Merithew, a retired Omaha Police lieutenant, is running OPD Sgt. Aaron Hanson in the Republican primary for Douglas County Sheriff.

According to the citation, Merithew was on his way to south Omaha's Cinco de Mayo parade in a 2020 BMW with a young passenger. The citation also stated that he was wearing a "Merithew for Sheriff" shirt.

The ticketing officer stated that they were unaware of Merithew's identity prior to stopping the vehicle. The officer also wrote that Merithew showed his retired police badge during the stop.

The ticket comes with a $300 fine.

The upcoming primary election between Merithew and Hanson is Tuesday.
