WAYNE, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska college club is holding a blood drive this week.

The Wayne State College Red Cross Club is holding its first blood drive of the month this Wednesday.

According to the Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. is in need of blood, and one donation can help save more than one life.

Allie Jaixen, the president of the Red Cross Club, told News Channel Nebraska why she thinks it's important to donate blood, especially in small Nebraska towns.

"I think it's important because if I was in a life or death situation, I would like to know if someone was willing to give their blood to me," Jaixen said. "That's why I like to give blood because it gives me that piece of mind that someone would do the same for me. But, I also like helping people and in a small town is really great way of helping people."

The club holds blood drives eight times a year, four times in the Spring and four times in the Fall.

Jaixen added that she's been organizing blood drives and helping the Red Cross since before coming to Wayne State.

"When I was in high school, I started doing this through one of my classes," she said. "I hosted my own in high school, I really liked it, and then I came here and just started doing it. When I was in high school, I was really involved in community service projects, blood drives, and just helping other people and I thought that was a good way to continue that on through college."

At the last two blood drives, the Red Cross Club collected a combined total of 85 units of blood.

Jaixen also had a message for those who might be hesitant or on the fence about donating.

"It's a great way to help other people," she said. "You may not see it,, it really helps people save lives."

The blood drive will take place on Nov. 2 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the Frey Conference Suite at the Kanter Student Center.

Walk-ins are welcome or make an appointment on the Red Cross website.
