The Omaha Police Department said officers were dispatched to 33rd St. and Ames Ave. around 4:10 a.m. on Sunday for a reported shooting.

Officers said they found two victims at the scene with gunshot wounds. Medics with the Omaha Fire Department transported them to a nearby hospital where one of the victims later died.

According to authorities, six more victims were taken to a nearby hospital by a private vehicle. They all had non-life-threatening injuries, OPD said.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer issued a statement Sunday afternoon, saying:

"It is imperative OPD pieces together what took place so resolve can come for the victims and their families. At this point in the investigation, an after-hours party was occurring and a confrontation took place resulting in gunfire. There is no indication it was a random shooting.  Extra OPD resources are being utilized and police presence will increase for the time being."
