Ninety years in federal prison and fines totaling $1.75 million.

Those are the eye-popping, maximum penalties facing Omaha City Council Vice-President Vinny Palermo following his arrest and indictment accused of taking kickbacks along with charges of bank and mail fraud.

Palermo and three others named in a public corruption case for, among other things, misusing funds from an inner-city Omaha non-profit hailed for keeping kids in sports and out of trouble.

The kickback cases find prosecutors arguing that Palermo sold his city hall office… twice.

First a deal with Omaha Glass Pro, a windshield repair company that shares “office and lot space” with Palermo’s company, Vinny’s Tree Service. According to the 27-page indictment Palermo “voted on numerous city contracts awarded to Omaha Glass Pro,” totaling $93,000.  In return Omaha Glass Pro “paid off the loan” on his 2018 Chevy truck along with his “commercial rent.”

A second kickback accuses Palermo of scheming with a concrete contractor, who also does work for the city, to pour concrete for his home’s backyard “pool deck” with Palermo receiving a “substantial discount” and paying the contractor “in cash to conceal” the deal.

Mayor Jean Stothert says Palermo should resign immediately.

NCN has tried to reach Palermo for comment but he has not responded.
