Palermo has been indicted and remains in jail accused of federal kickback and fraud charges.

Last week the City Council temporarily stripped him of his title as Council Vice-President.

Tuesday the council is scheduled to vote on whether to permanently eliminate Vice-President from Palermo’s title.

The city accusing Palermo of “conduct unbecoming” the V-P role, along with his apparent inability to attend meetings.

Ordered by a federal judge to remain behind bars while awaiting trial, Palermo, a 2-term Democrat, would automatically relinquish his south Omaha Council seat should he have three consecutive months of unexcused absences from the council’s nearly weekly meetings.

Despite calls from some fellow council members—notably all three Republicans and GOP Mayor Jean Stothert—to resign Palermo has refused to quit.
