Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon, the state’s most politically vulnerable Republican on Capitol Hill, is making mixed comments on the indictment of former President Donald Trump.

Bacon clearly bothered by Trump’s handling of classified documents, while also accusing the Justice Department of two standards of punishment.

Republican Don Bacon, who has been elected four times in one of the country’s rarer and rarer purple districts, appears at first glance ready to take on former President Trump, as he weighs in on Trump’s historic federal criminal indictment regarding the handling of classified government files.

In his initial statement Bacon says, “(He’s) I am shocked at the alleged callousness of how these documents were handled. They should not have been stored in his home and should have been completely handed over when the government requested.”

Trump: “Very sadly we’re a nation in decline and yet they go after a popular President.”

Two years ago, Bacon began distancing himself from Trump, sort of…

NCN’s Joe Jordan (2021): “You’re hoping he doesn’t run in 2024.

Rep. Don Bacon: “I’d would rather see a new candidate. Tim Scott. Personally, I like Mike Pence, I know him real well. Of course, it depends, Joe Biden is doing so poorly in the polling that maybe President Trump could still win.”

Which takes us to the rest of Bacon’s latest statement, where he adds some pro-Trump talking points.

According to Bacon, “The alleged obstruction to the requests of the National Archives and FBI, if true, is inexcusable.”

And then he adds this: “I’m the same person who criticized Hilary Clinton for knowingly and willfully storing thousands of classified emails on her unclassified computer, and thought the DOJ failed in holding her accountable. I believe in using the same standards and ask the DOJ to do the same.”

Bacon is running for reelection next year, having won in 2022 over Democrat Tony Vargas by a slim 2 points.

Vargas has not said if he’s in for a re-run against Bacon who has said he won’t support Trump in the primary.

NCN’S Joe Jordan (ELECTION NIGHT, 2022): “You didn’t mention Donald Trump tonight, will you support him in 2024?”

Rep. Bacon: “I’ve already said I won’t support him in the primary.”

But Bacon won’t say if he’ll support Trump, if Trump wins the primary.
