LINCOLN, Neb. -- Two Lincoln teens were taken into custody after a pursuit in a stolen vehicle Sunday night.

The Nebraska State Patrol said that around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, the Lincoln Police Department got a report that a Hyundai Elantra had just been stolen from the area of 17th and South Streets.

About 30 minutes later, a trooper said they found the vehicle traveling west on Superior St.

As the vehicle turned north onto 14th St., the trooper said they tried to pull the vehicle over.

Rather than pulling over, authorities said the driver accelerated and fled. The trooper then initiated a pursuit.

The NSP said the vehicle turned into a residential area near 14th and Julesburg Dr. and continued to flee.

The vehicle reportedly drove through the residential neighborhood and eventually returned to 14th St. and started heading south in the the northbound lanes.

NSP said the vehicle then turned east onto Fletcher, and speed up to more than 70 mph.

As the vehicle approached 27th St. speeding, the NSP said trooper backed off.

The trooper said they then saw the vehicle run a red light at 27th St., lose control, and crash into a pole. The entire pursuit lasted about three minutes.

The driver, identified as a 13-year-old female, and passenger, identified as a 17-year-old female, were both transported to a local medical center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver was then lodged in a youth detention facility for theft by unlawful taking - $5,000+, flight to avoid arrest, and no operator’s license.

Once released from the hospital, the passenger will be cited for aiding and abetting.

The Lincoln Police Department is handling the stolen vehicle investigation.
