Late Thanksgiving night, Omaha police are called to this neighborhood just north of downtown.
Shortly after they arrive a 10-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound is rushed to the hospital where he dies.
His father 47-year-old Will McDonald, a convicted felon, is accused of pulling the trigger after hearing a car-alarm outside his home.
Don Kleine, Douglas County Attorney (R): “Gets his gun. Says he thinks he sees some people by his car maybe even one inside the passenger part of the car. That person gets out and leaves. He sees another young person coming up towards him. Fires his gun. Doesn't say he's threatened, then realizes as the person gets closer that he fired and shot his son.”
According to Nebraska prison records, McDonald was convicted in 1993 for felony theft and robbery in Douglas County and served 10 years behind bars, released in 2003.
Two years later, he was charged in Douglas County with making terroristic threats, possession of a firearm by a felon and using a firearm to commit a felony. Two of the charges (terroristic threats and using a firearm to commit a felony) were eventually dropped and in 2008 McDonald was placed on probation, including electronic monitoring, for five years.
Accused of killing his son finds him charged with manslaughter and two gun crimes, he’s facing from 20-years to life in prison.
