OGALLALA - The Ogallala Police Department is investigating a shooting in the Keith County community that left one person dead at 411 West 6th Street on Tuesday.

Authorities say Chet Stenzel is accused of shooting and killing Jeremiah VanLinda with a Mossberg International 715T semi-automatic rifle. Following an investigation and a discussion with witnesses, Stenzel was taken into custody for murder in the second degree. 

No motive for the shooting was released by authorities as of Wednesday. 

"This is an unfortunate incident, and I ask that you respect everyone involved or affected by this tragedy," Keith County Attorney Randy Fair said in a statement. " If you have any information that could help law enforcement, please contact the Ogallala Police Department. Thanks for your understanding as this community deals with the terrible circumstances. Please keep the family in your thoughts."

Ogallala police are being assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol investigative team. Keith County EMS also responded to the scene.
