NORFOLK, Neb. -- Law enforcement in northeast Nebraska responded to a single-vehicle injury accident Saturday evening.

The Norfolk Police Division said they responded to the accident along with Norfolk Fire & Rescue.

The accident happened near the 900 block of South Chestnut St. The driver, a 38-year-old Norfolk man, was taken to a local Norfolk hospital and later transferred to Omaha for further treatment.

Police said the vehicle was driving south in the parking lot of an apartment complex on South Chestnut. The vehicle continued south between two apartment buildings, and went into an open field where the vehicle then turned east.

While going east, the vehicle headed towards a water culvert that drains into the North Fork of the Elkhorn River, just west of the flood control.

NPD said the vehicle hit the culvert and drove down the embankment causing the car to flip and come to rest on the frozen river.

Law enforcement said that alcohol is suspected of being a contributing factor. This is an ongoing investigation.
