Kimball students plant trees in Gotte Park

KIMBALL -- Kimball fourth graders gathered with city workers at Gotte Park Thursday afternoon to assist in planting trees in celebration of the 153rd Arbor Day.
Kimball Street Super Jim Shoup shared with the kids the importance of trees saying, “They say trees are the lungs of the world, they take in all the carbon dioxide, and they release it out; one tree can make enough oxygen for four people.”
Four trees were planted, and a fifth tree will be planted later. The kids named the four trees Kevin, Long John, LeBron James, and Gerald.
The kids received a mini lesson about trees, how the process works and how to know the best place to plant trees based on the type of tree.
Science Teacher Kevin Kilgore says the kids are able to apply what they learn in the classroom to a real-world experience.
He adds that when they are asked about which field trip they like the most, they say planting the trees.
“It shows the hands-on activities are the ones they love to do,” Kilgore said.
