Sidney graduate found deceased in city drainage ditch

SIDNEY, Neb. — Authorities identified the human remains discovered near the BNSF railroad tracks in Sidney Tuesday evening as 24-year-old Mattea R. Scheuerman of Greensburg, Indiana.
According to the Cheyenne County Attorney Amber Horn, in a joint press release with the Sidney Police Department and Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office, a report of a body floating in water was received at approximately 8:03 p.m. on June 3 by the Cheyenne County Emergency Communications Center.
Deputies with the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Sidney Police Department responded to the scene and located Scheuerman’s body in a drainage ditch next to a culvert near 7th Avenue and Maple Street.
The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Sidney Public Schools confirmed with News Channel Nebraska, Scheuerman was a 2019 graduate. Cheyenne County Sheriff Adam Frerichs says she was in town visiting. Her social media profile lists she studied at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling and worked for YETI and RDI Corporation. She's the mother of two kids.
Officials say an autopsy has been scheduled, and the investigation remains ongoing. No additional information has been released by authorities.
Scheuerman’s remains were initially discovered by a group of local children walking near a tunnel beneath the railroad tracks, according to a nearby resident.
