WAUNETA, Neb. — The Chase County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fuel theft that resulted in the loss of approximately 500 gallons of diesel fuel early Sunday morning in Chase County.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the theft occurred around 4 a.m. Dec. 14. Deputies were notified of the incident on Dec. 15 after responding to Crossroads in Wauneta for a report of stolen fuel.

Investigators were able to obtain video footage of the suspect and the vehicle believed to be involved in the theft. The suspect remains at large and is described as a male wearing a gray sweatshirt, white sweatpants tucked into boots, and a trapper-style hat.

Pending charges include theft by unlawful taking under Nebraska Statute 28-511(B), involving property valued between $1,500 and $5,000.

The Chase County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents and local businesses to remain vigilant, noting that fuel theft incidents often involve repeat activity in the same area before suspects move on.
