Nebraska women fall late at Iowa despite 27 from Prince
IOWA CITY - Britt Prince scored a game-high 27 points, but the No. 20 Nebraska women’s basketball team was outscored 16-6 over the final 5:30 and dropped an 86-76 decision to No. 14 Iowa on New Year’s Day.
Nebraska fell to 12-2 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play, suffering its second straight loss to a ranked conference opponent. The Huskers shot 50 percent from the field and held a narrow rebounding edge, but turnovers and free throws proved costly in the second half.
Iowa improved to 12-2 and 3-0 in league play, shooting 49.1 percent from the floor, including 7-of-20 from three-point range. The Hawkeyes also went 23-of-28 at the free throw line, outscoring Nebraska 23-12 at the stripe.
Jessica Petrie added 17 points for Nebraska, while senior Eliza Maupin recorded her first double-double as a Husker with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in 21 minutes while making her first career start. Maupin’s expanded role came with the absence of sophomore forward Amiah Hargrove, who missed the game with a minor injury.
Nebraska led 45-44 at halftime after a back-and-forth first half that featured nine ties and six lead changes. Prince scored 17 of her points before the break, including 11 in the second quarter.
Iowa seized momentum early in the third quarter, but Nebraska answered to pull within 64-61 heading into the fourth. The game remained tight until Iowa closed on a decisive 10-0 run after the score was tied at 70 with 5:44 remaining.
Chit-Chat Wright led Iowa with 24 points, including eight late, while Hannah Stuelke added 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ava Heiden finished with 18 points.
Nebraska returns home Sunday to begin a three-game homestand against Purdue.
