LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska School Activities Association will evaluate its heat-related guidelines after the death of an Omaha South High School football player earlier this month.

The heat index was between 100 and 106 when Drake Geiger collapsed on August 10th. Geiger and his fellow players had just taken a water break after about 10 minutes of practicing in shorts and no pads. He was walking back to practice when he collapsed.

The family contends the field, which is an artificial surface, was much hotter than the heat index recorded that day. They are now calling for several changes, including cooldown stations and closer consideration to determine if there are unsafe practice conditions.

NSAA officials have pledged to look into their policies.

A funeral for Geiger is planned for Saturday in Omaha.
