A once high-ranking Omaha priest, charged with stealing thousands of dollars from a fellow Omaha priest, has been ordered to stand trial.

73-year-old Rev. Michael Gutgsell, former Chancellor of the Omaha Archdiocese, is accused of raiding the bank account of Rev. Ted Richling.

According to prosecutors, Richling was in failing health and incapacitated when Gutgsell—who had power of attorney over Richling's finances—was writing himself more than 100 checks, totaling at least $155,000.

Gutgsell's lawyer has indicated that his client had every intention of giving the money back but had handed it over to a  homeless con-artist, who promised to repay Gutsgell but never did.

Gutgsell faces up to 20 years in prison for theft and up to four years for abusing a vulnerable adult, no trial date has been set.

Gutgsell is also suspected of stealing $125,000 from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springfield No charges have been filed in that case.

According to a recent state report investigating sexual abuse by Catholic priests, Fr. Richling—who died two years ago— is accused of engaging in "inappropriate actions" with minors dating back nearly 40 years.
