Since announcing his bid for governor in April, Nebraska Democrats have made the case that Charles Herbster played an unhealthy role in events leading up to the January 6th riot at the US Capitol.

Officials with the Nebraska Democratic Party insist that Herbster helped fund a rally by former President Donald Trump, a rally that preceded the rioting which led to the deaths of five people and over a million dollars in damages at the Capitol.

The day rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol, Herbster—one of the six Nebraska Republicans running for Governor— was in Washington DC.

He’s also the Republican who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

And while Charles Herbster acknowledges he was in the crowd near the White House as Trump rallied his troops to overturn the 2020 election, Herbster insists he was not at the Capitol when the riot began.

Democrat State Chair Jane Kleeb told the Omaha World-Herald earlier this year that Nebraskans will not elect someone who, “Continues to back Trump and his violent supporters at the risk of our democracy.”

Earlier this year NCN asked Herbster about Trump's claims that the 2020 election was stolen.

NCN’s Joe Jordan:  Was he in your view the real winner of the election in November?

Herbster: Well I don't think there's any way we know.

“Five people died and more than 130 police officers were wounded in a treasonous attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election,” Kleeb said Wednesday. “Republicans played a critical role in inciting the violence while Trump watched the insurrectionists on TV."

Herbster's campaign has not responded to requests for comments for this story.
