That new Omaha skyline city officials have hoped for is a whole lot closer to reality today and it comes with another major development: a 3-mile long downtown streetcar.

And both come with lots of questions.

It was two months ago when NCN first reported city hall’s wish to change Omaha’s skyline.

November 2021:

NCN's Joe Jordan: So you're talking about another skyscraper.

Mayor Stothert: Well, I don't know. What would you consider a skyscraper?

NCN's Joe Jordan: Well, similar to the (First National) bank.

Mayor Stothert: I'd love to see something similar to the bank.

And now here it is.

A new Mutual of Omaha headquarters, apparently at least as tall as the First National Bank, hand in hand with Stothert’s other big reveal today, a —give or take—$225 million dollar downtown streetcar.

Mayor Stothert: This building downtown at that site would not be possible without a modern streetcar.

NCN’s Joe Jordan: Mr. Blackledge did you tell the Mayor no streetcar, no building?

James Blackledge, Mutual of Omaha: No I told the mayor that the streetcar enables us to consider this move downtown.

The Mutual tower, price tag not revealed, would replace the downtown library which is likely moving to this fixer-upper in the Old Market, just a few blocks away, a land swap that has more than its share of critics, many who complained to the city council yesterday.
