Crete names new girls basketball coach

CRETE, NE — The Cardinals have their new leader for their girls basketball program.
Crete Activities Director Matt Martin announced Britt Ehlers will be taking over as the team's head coach.
"CPS is excited to welcome Coach Ehlers to Crete and the Cardinal family," Martin wrote in a statement posted to social media. "Coach Ehlers will do a fantastic job developing, mentoring and supporting our young women in basketball, in their academics and as young leaders in our community."
Ehlers comes to Crete after spending the last two years as a coach at Lincoln Christian.
He takes over a team that has seen plenty of success in recent memory. Crete made the state tournament three consecutive years from 2019-21. They won the Class B Championship in 2020 after finishing as the runner-up in 2019.
Ehlers will fill the position which became available when John Larsen retired earlier this month. Larsen is a legend amongst Nebraska coaches, stepping down with 638 career wins, the most all time by a girls basketball coach in the state.
