Gov. Pete Ricketts is stepping up his criticism of Charles Herbster, one of the leading GOP candidates for governor.

This latest criticism following accusations—all denied by Herbster—that he sexually assaulted eight women, including State Sen. Julie Slama.

Slama is the only one of the eight who has made her name public.

During a news conference today, Ricketts—who appointed Slama to the Legislature—stood by her. “I believe Sen. Slama," said Ricketts. "I believe her.”

And he wasn't done.

“With regard to what Charles Herbster should do, I think he needs to apologize to the women and then I think he should seek help and I think he should step out of the race.”

Ricketts was then asked about his support for former President Donald Trump:

“Why the difference between Charles Herbster and when President Trump was accused of making some lewd remarks or actually was on tape making remarks?  I think it's very different when you're looking at accusations of sexual assault, which is what Charles Herbster is involved, versus the lewd comments the President was making. You may recall at the time I condemned those remarks and said that I would not be contributing to his campaign."

Herbster has accused Ricketts of leading a move by the "political establishment" to defeat him.

Ricketts has endorsed NU Regent Jim Pillen and said that Herbster would be a "horrible" governor.
