Trying to thread a political needle Omaha area Congressman Don Bacon is explaining his vote in favor of same sex marriage.
Bacon was one of less than 50 House Republicans to support the “Respect for Marriage Act” a move by Capitol Hill Democrats to put same sex marriage into law, arguing that the new conservative controlled Supreme Court will someday overturn its 2015 ruling upholding same sex civil unions.
In a statement following his vote, Bacon said that he believes in the traditional definition of marriage but does “not believe the government should dictate who can marry…based on gender race, or ethnicity.”
Bacon was the only one of Nebraska’s three Congressmen to vote in favor of the bill.
