HASTINGS, Neb. -- It’s that time of the year when the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office releases their tabloid in newspapers across the state.

State Treasurer John Murante is encouraging people to check the Unclaimed Property Tabloid list. He said it’s a problem more common than people might think.

“It’s extremely prevalent, so we have $200 million in unclaimed property that we’re trying to return to the people of Nebraska, and about 20% of Nebraskans have some unclaimed property in our office. “

He said they get claims every day, and that for the most part is just cash.

Murante said that last year they set an all-time record by returning $18 million to Nebraskans and he claims it's an easy process.

“So, right on the website nebraskalostcash.nebraska.gov you search your name. You hit claim. Five minutes later for the simple claims where we have your name, we have your social security number you input it we can get it back to you. The claim, the process will last five minutes and we’ll get you a check in 7 to 10 days.”

Throughout the month of March, citizens can look through newspapers for the list.
