The so-called “death tax” goes before the public in Lincoln today.

State lawmakers are holding a hearing on legislation aimed at eliminating inheritance taxes in Nebraska.

According to the proposal, both the state and counties would be prohibited from taxing inherited property.

One of the strongest supporters of the repeal, the right-leaning Platte Institute, says its 2021 poll found 78 percent of Nebraska voters in favor of repealing the tax.

If it's OK'd by the Legislature, and it's likely that vote wouldn't come for weeks, it would go to the voters in 2024 to decide if the state constitution should be changed to end the tax.
