OMAHA, Neb. -- The Douglas County Sheriff's Office announced the return of a veteran officer. 

DCSO said Lt. Jennifer Birkhofer recently returned from the FBI National Academy that is in Virginia. 

Sheriff Hanson and DCSO said that Birkhofer is a 17.3 year veteran for the department, and is one of many promising leaders under Hanson's new administration. 

The Sheriff's Office said that Birkhofer is the first female command officer at her rank to attend the FBI National Academy. 

Birkhofer was one of 247 law enforcement officers that graduated March 16 from the National Academy. 

Officials said that 285th session of the National Academy was comprised of men and women from 47 states and D.C. 

It was also noted that the class included members of law enforcement agencies from 28 countries, four military branches, and five federal civilian organizations. 

DCSO said that Birkhofer will develop her skills within the Administrative Services Division where she will use her experiences as a mentee in the DCSO budget preparation and analysis process.
