Take a look at the 10 closest cars around you, and odds are one of those drivers is looking at their cell phone.

That according to the latest numbers from the Nebraska Highway Safety Office.

And there are other numbers pointing to continuing problems with distracted drivers as the state joins a nationwide crackdown, known as "U Drive, UText, U Pay."

And here’s some more numbers specific to Nebraska.

In 2020, there were 19,354 crashes across the state. 20 percent of those, 3,924 involved distracted drivers. 19 of those crashes left at least one person dead.

As NCN has reported, distracted driving in Nebraska is what’s known as a “secondary offense.”

In other words while it is illegal to text and drive in Nebraska, you can only be ticketed if you are first charged with another violation.

And the same goes for seat belts.
