Workers in the Metro spent the weekend putting the finishing touches on an internationally known moment.

The “Embracing Peace” statue, 26 feet high and weighing 35,000 pounds, is now on hand at Omaha’s Memorial Park for the next several months.

The statue, by the artist Seward Johnson, resembles the iconic photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on VJ day, marking the end of World War II.

It’s all part of the 75th anniversary of the park, which sits on 65 acres of land in central Omaha and was dedicated by President Harry Truman in 1948.

Memorial Park serves as a civic reminder to those men and women who serve in the U.S. military, specifically noting the names of those Omahans who gave their lives to defeat Germany and Japan.

The traveling exhibit will be in Omaha through November.
