NORFOLK, Neb. -- Day one of the Class A state golf tournament took place Tuesday at Norfolk Country Club.

Through 18 holes, a surprise leader in Millard North's Sam Vocelka shot a personal best five under 67.

"I knew if I just had the right mindset I would be able to post a good score," he said. "It was just putting, I kept making putts."

Behind Vocelka at -5 is Gavin Gersch of Lincoln Southeast at -3, followed by Trevor Gutschewski and Porter Topp of Omaha Westside tied for third at -2.

Lincoln Southeast is leading the team standings with a total team even-par 288.

The second round will be played Wednesday at Norfolk Country Club.
