When Republican Congressman Don Bacon voted the other day, the head of his party—former President Donald Trump—was in court accused of covering up hush money payments to a porn star and getting plenty of support.

Rep. Byron Donalds, (R) Florida: "Ladies and gentlemen of America, this trial is a joke. This thing is a farce."

Gov. Doug Burgum, (R) North Dakota: "I think the only conclusion is that it's election interference and it's tying up the president from being out on the campaign trail."

Sen. J.D. Vance, (R) Ohio: "What's going on inside that courtroom is a threat to American democracy."

But Congressman Don Bacon has a different view.

Rep. Don Bacon, Nebraska 2nd District (R): “It’s a distraction, it hurts the President.”

Bacon is running for reelection in a 50-50 district, where Joe Biden beat Trump by seven points in 2020.

Joe Jordan, NCN: “Do you find the ongoing trial of former President Trump embarrassing for the Republican Party?”

Bacon: Well, it’s not good.

Jordan: “Is the Trump trial going well for Democrats?”

State Sen. Tony Vargas, Candidate for Congress (D): “I don’t know if it is or is not going well. But he gets a trial. He gets to have his day or days in court.”

State Sen. Tony Vargas is running against Bacon and trial or no trial, clearly ready to make Trump an issue in November.

Vargas: “What I care about is whether or not this country has somebody in the presidency that will protect the government system. I will always put that above party. What we’ve seen is that’s not the case with President Trump right now.”

At the same time both Vargas and Bacon are quick to move to other issues as well.

Rep. Bacon: “Joe Biden has his problems, he’s polling at 36 percent the worst of any president going back to 1952. He has Afghanistan around his neck, he has eight million people coming here illegally.”

Vargas: “What I care more about is what I’m hearing from voters. They care about cost of living, they care about good jobs, they care about lowering insurance and health care costs. Bacon has voted against lowering health care costs.”

Still the trial…

Donald Trump: "It's a scam.”

… is right in front of everyone.
