Museum of Nebraska Art to reopen in May after being closed for nearly four years

KEARNEY, Neb.- A Kearney museum is re-opening in May after being closed for nearly four years due to construction.
The Museum of Nebraska Art, MONA, announced Monday that it will host a grand re-opening celebration on May 3, where the public can see the new and renovated additions.
The project, which was green-lit in 2019, includes both the complete renovation of the historic 1911 U.S. Post Office building, and the construction of a new addition right next to the old building.
MONA officials say the 23,000 square-foot expansion includes new exhibition spaces, a retail shop, enhanced amenities, and improved accessibility.
The project is supported by a $36.5 million capital campaign and, back in 2021, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts approved $7.5 million for the renovation project.
MONA was originally formed in the mid-1970s by Kearney State College professors, before officially opening in the current location back in October 1986.
The building was renovated for the only time in 1993, where it was expanded and remained the same until the 2019 comprehensive plan was completed.
The re-opening celebration on May 3 will feature free activities such as art and interactive experiences, to go along with live performances by local musicians.
