Sky-High Art: new 28-foot sculpture to transform Norfolk roundabout
NORFOLK, Neb. -- Norfolk's skyline is about to get a major makeover.
Defying gravity and expectations, a massive 28-foot sculpture called "Finding Joy" has been approved for the Norfolk Avenue and Victory Road roundabout. Artist Leslie Bruning addressed the city council about the 1,000-pound creation, hoping to give a transformative experience for the community.
With funds from the CARES Act fund and the city budget allocated towards the arts, the Norfolk Parks and Recreation worked alongside the public arts council to help bring more art to the community. A number of artists submitted their work, but Leslie Bruning from Omaha was made the finalist.
Originally, "Finding Joy" was set to be placed in Johnson Park on a much smaller scale, but due to the sculpture being bigger than expected, it needed a space that would accommodate its larger than life height of 28 feet. Once completed, the all-steel, 1,000-pound structure will be placed on the Norfolk Ave. and Victory Road roundabout.
“It’s sort of an uplifting piece, not only because it's brightly colored and the colors play with each other, the spaces and three dimensional areas are kind of playing with each other as well,” said Finding Joy Artist Leslie Bruning. “That's what the arts are made to do, they will make you see something different than what you expect to see.”
The total project cost is $87,000. Bruning did not give a specific date of completion, but hopes to have it built and installed in six months.
