KIMBALL COUNTY -- A 13-year-old boy from Cheyenne was involved in a serious motocross accident during practice on Sunday at Kimball County Motocross – KCMX.

Co-owner of the track Melissa Caldwell said motorcyclists and their families were at the track preparing for a race coming up in August.

The boy, who the family has asked not to release his name, was one of several riders finishing the last lap of practice when he landed on one of the jumps and suddenly went down.

Melissa said: “All of a sudden, we saw him go down ... He just landed wrong, and it whipped him off the bike.”

No further details about the accident or the boy's condition are being released at this time.

Melissa advises riders to always wear their protective gear, even if they are just going out on the track to test something.

“If he was not wearing his helmet, boots, all of that, I don’t know if we would have even had a chance to save him,” Melissa said. “This was one of those freaky things that you never think is going to happen, and then it does. There was nothing anyone did wrong, it just happens, and it’s a dangerous sport.”

Melissa said several people had their hand in saving the little boy’s life and stepped up to do whatever they could.

“It wasn’t just one person who saved him; it was the whole motocross family,” she said.

Her husband, Mike Caldwell, made sure that everybody was cleared and there would be no obstruction for the ambulance to get to him quickly and safely.

Bystanders stepped up and grabbed flags in case they needed to flag a spot for Flight For Life to land, and another rider cleared a spot for them to land.

“Even though it was very scary, once the ambulance got there, it was a beautiful thing to see all the hugs going on, the tears, the people huddled in prayer for him,” Melissa said. “And the amount of support online that the motocross family is giving the family – It’s a beautiful thing.”

Motorcyclist Sean McNulty said he was amazed to see the tight knit moto family come together and step up when everyone needed it the most.

“Yesterday was a crazy and unfortunate day, but I got to witness random people, close friends to the kids all pull together to keep him alive,” he said. “I've been CPR certified for 20 years but never seen it performed to save a life.”
