Man arrested for motor vehicle homicide after child killed near Nebraska City Farmers Market
NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (KOLN) - The Nebraska City Police Department made an arrest after a 6-year-old was hit and killed near a farmers market on Thursday.
Vernon Christiansen, 59, is in the Otoe County Jail on suspicion of motor vehicle homicide, DUI drugs 3rd offense, open alcohol container, bald tire and obstructed view of driver.
The jail confirmed Christiansen was arrested in connection to the child’s death.
Nebraska City Police and first responders were dispatched to the area near 8th Street by the Veterans Memorial Building for a pedestrian being hit. This reportedly happened about an hour after the farmers market nearby had opened.
The driver of a pickup truck reportedly hit a child in the alley on the edge of the area blocked-off for the farmers market, News Channel Nebraska said.
Nebraska City Police Chief Ben Murry said arriving officers found a 6-year-old had been struck by a vehicle and ran over near the alley.
Murry said an investigation is ongoing.
