LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 26-year-old Lincoln resident who came to prominence during last year's protests of the George Floyd murder is turning to the political realm.

Jazari Kual announced over the weekend that he is running to replace Nebraska's first district congressman, Jeff Forteberry.

Kual is running as a Democrat, meaning one of his primary opponents will be State Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks.

Fortenberry is a nine-term congressman currently under a three-count federal indictment involving a campaign contribution from a non-U.S. citizen.
