Omaha reports 34th traffic death as city moves forward with lofty safety project

Just days before taking a major step geared to turning Omaha into a super-safe traffic town, the state's largest city recorded its 34th traffic death of the year.
On Christmas Day 21-year-old Seth Dawson of Omaha was killed while walking across the street.
According to police, the driver 31-year-old Brandon Hartman, was booked on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.
While the accident remains under investigation, city officials are ready to move forward with a nationwide safety project known as Vision Zero.
The project's lofty goal is to reduce the number of serious traffic injuries and deaths to near zero.
On January 5th the city officially launches its search for a consultant team "consisting of local and national talent."
While it's not clear how much the city is willing to pay, earlier this year Omaha hired a project coordinator—Jeff Sobczyk—at a reported $71,000 a year.
This year's 34 traffic deaths are down from 43 last year.
