Two outages leave northeast Nebraskans in the cold
PIERCE, Neb. -- There were two different outages in the Norfolk area Saturday night caused by the winter storm, according to Grant Otten, NPPD Media Relations Specialist.
The first was an outage at around 5 p.m. affecting 190 customers in the Meadow Grove area, which was restored around 10:30 p.m.
The second outage impacted 373 customers on the southside of Norfolk, Otten said, likewise starting at 4:52 p.m. Their power was restored around 6:40 p.m.
All of Pierce was also without power. Nick Harvey, in town, said when he got home the town seemed eerie. He piled up four blankets while his home got down to about fifty degrees.
"It was like a ghost town in a way," Harvey said.
Both outages were caused by galloping lines, which "is when the wind is blowing hard enough that adjacent powerlines begin to swing and hit each other," Otten said. "If there is any ice build-up on the lines, that can be a contributing factor to the lines galloping."
