COLUMBUS, Neb.  - One Husker defeated another to claim the 99th Nebraska Women's Match Play Championship.

Megan Whittaker of Elkhorn took the title Thursday after defeating University of Nebraska teammate Lindsey Thiele.

Whittaker will be coming back to play for her fifth year Huskers this fall. Whittaker won the Nebraska Girls' Match Play back in 2016 and 2018, but this is her first win at the women's championship.

Whittaker earned her way into the championship round by shooting a 71 to earn co-medalist honors in the stroke play qualifying round with Nicole Kolbas of Lincoln. Whittaker was given the No. 2 seed and then won her next three matches to advance her to the finals.

Whittaker dominated Thursday's championship round, closing out Thiele in just 13 holes. It was the third time in four rounds that Whittaker closed out an opponent by the 13th hole. In her four matches, she played just 55 of a possible 72 holes.

On No. 13, Thiele tried to make something happen and went for the green in two, but her shot went left of the green next to a row of bushes. Her par putt eventually slid by, and Whittaker slammed the door shut with yet another birdie.

Justin Ahrens, assistant executive director for the Nebraska Golf Association, said over 50 players were entered to play that started Tuesday.

This championship tournament features girls from all over the state of Nebraska.
