Fischer: Manchin was 'fooled'
As the Senate passed a $700 billion plan aiming to combat climate change, raise taxes on large corporations and lower rising health care costs Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer has had some less than flattering words for one of her fellow Senators.
It's all part of the Democrats' Inflation Reduction Act.
According to President Biden, it’s just what Americans want: A bill closing tax loopholes forcing the richest individuals and corporations to pay at least some taxes; billions of dollars to fight climate change and bringing inflation down.
Sen. Fischer (KFAB Radio): “They even named it the Inflation Reduction Act. It’s sad because the things that are in it certainly don't reduce inflation when you're spending more money.
So, Nebraska Republican Senator Deb Fischer is a no vote. But the bill appears ready to make it to the President’s desk, thanks largely to West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin’s unexpected yes vote.
Sen. Manchin: “This is a balanced bill that gives energy security that this country desperately needs. People say that this is a Democrat bill, a Republican bill or a green bill. This is a red, white, and blue bill.”
Sen. Fischer: “I think he was fooled to be honest with you a lot of the stuff that that's in this disastrous piece is things that he's been against in the past.”
Expect the public and political debate on the bill to continue between now and Election Day.
