NORFOLK, Neb. -- Northeast Community College is bringing home a pair of Region XI championships after sweeping the men's and women's soccer titles over the weekend.

The No. 9 Hawks claimed the men's crown on Saturday with a 2-1 win over No. 7 Southeastern Community College, while the seventh-ranked women's squad claimed a third straight championship with a 3-0 over Hawkeye Community College on Sunday.

The Northeast men (18-4, 6-2 ICCAC) claimed their first regional crown by gaining a measure of revenge over Southeastern. The Hawks had fallen twice to the Blackhawks earlier in the season.

Northeast grabbed control of the game early and never relinquished it throughout. Conor Carew put in a beautiful header from Teun van der Donk to get the Hawks on the board first. Sergio Aspas worked his way around the opposing goalkeeper to give Northeast a 2-0 advantage at intermission.

Southeastern didn’t go down without a fight out of the halftime locker room however, and they came close to a few different goal chances in the early stages of the second half. The defense for the Hawks stood strong and despite giving up a goal with just one minute to play, Northeast hoisted the Region XI trophy on the road.

The Hawks finished last season with a record of 7-15 and now just one year later they have downed the defending NJCAA Division II National Champions in the title match. Northeast is now just one win away from advancing to the National Tournament in Pima, Arizona.

The championship was nothing new for the Northeast women's squad, however, with the Hawks claiming a third straight crown.

Northeast (18-2-1, 9-1 ICCAC) cruised to a 3-0 win against Hawkeye, their second win in three tries over the RedTails. Northeast had beaten Hawkeye 8-0 in late September before dropping a 1-0 road defeat two weeks later.

Mackenzee Stokes got the Hawks on the board in the 16th minute to give Northeast the early edge. Northeast's lead remained just 1-0 at the break, despite holding an 8-1 advantage in first-half shots, including five shots on goal.

The Hawks distanced themselves with a pair of second-half goals, first from Taryn O'Brien, followed by another from Stokes.

Northeast's women's team will now travel to take on Pratt Community College in the District Championship, with a third-straight trip to the National Tournament on the line.
