Regis Uses Big Second Half To Beat Eagles
CHADRON, Neb. – The Regis Rangers scored 60 points in the second half, coming back from a halftime deficit to defeat the Chadron State women's basketball team 81-63 Saturday afternoon at the Chicoine Center.
The Eagles held Regis to just six points in the first quarter and led 29-21 at halftime, but the visiting Rangers shot 57 percent from the field in the second half, including 67 percent in the fourth quarter, to turn the tables after the break.
The loss drops Chadron State's record to 2-10 with a 1-5 RMAC record. Regis is now 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC.
Ashayla Powers led Chadron State with 19 points and seven rebounds in the loss, making 8 of 14 from the floor. Kylie Krise was also in double figures with 12 points.
McKenzi Petersen finished with a season-high eight points while making 3 of 4 field goal attempts and adding four rebounds. Kyra Tanabe had a team-high three assists along with nine points.
Regis had some big stat lines in the game. Athena Saragoza finished with 29 points on 10 of 23 shooting, hitting five threes. Jessica Bollwahn grabbed 18 rebounds for the Rangers.
The Eagles shot 36.7 percent from the field, 18.2 percent from three (4-22) and 75 percent from the line (15-20). Regis finished 39.5 percent from the field, 26 percent from three (7-27) and 14-17 from the line.
The first quarter was all Eagles. In the first 10 minutes, CSC held the Rangers to just 10 percent shooting from the floor (2-20), and after a game-opening bucket from Erin Fry, went on a 14-1 run to take a 14-3 lead. That scoring surge featured six points in the paint from Powers, a Bati Assefa three and made layups from Petersen and Camren Morris.
Regis began to cut into the lead in the second quarter, but the Eagles continued to play good defense and make shots. A Kadyn Comer three opened up a 22-12 lead for CSC, and after Regis cut it to five points at 26-21, the Eagles went 3-for-4 at the line to close out the period and head to halftime up by eight, 29-21.
In the second half, Regis's offense simply caught fire. The Rangers shot 47 percent from the field to score 29 points in the third quarter and 67 percent from the field to score 30 points in the fourth quarter. Regis made 4 of 7 three-point attempts in the final period.
Chadron State hits the road next week to face Adams State (8-7, 3-3 RMAC) on Thursday and New Mexico Highlands (5-7, 2-4 RMAC) on Saturday.
