Driver hospitalized after SUV crash near Sunol
SUNOL, Neb. — One person was hospitalized Saturday night following a single-vehicle crash on Link 17E, about one mile south of Sunol in Cheyenne County.
According to the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, the SUV exited Interstate 80 at the Sunol interchange and began swerving into ditches along both sides of the roadway beginning at County Road 18. The vehicle struck a mailbox and several road signs before coming to rest in a ditch on the east side of Link 17E near Lodgepole Creek.
Emergency crews were first dispatched to the scene at 8:48 p.m., initially responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle before the crash was confirmed.
The driver, a man in his early 20s and the lone occupant of the vehicle, was able to exit the SUV on his own and walked up to the road, where he waited for emergency responders. He was transported by ambulance to Sidney Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.
Authorities said emergency personnel did not detect the presence of alcohol at the scene. The name of the driver has not been released. The crash remains under investigation.
