PANHANDLE AREA -- "All gave some, some gave all," and with the sacrifice comes the need to the fallen soldiers. 

Several communities in the region are hosting events in honor of military veterans who have given the ultimate sacrifice. 

Memorial Day, a federal holiday held the last Monday in May, is the nation's foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women. Originally called Decoration Day, it was formalized by a "Memorial Day Order" issued by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan in 1868.

Americans are encouraged "to observe Memorial Day by praying, according to their individual religious faith, for permanent peace," according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

In Dalton, a public Memorial Service honoring the veterans of Dalton and the surrounding area will be held at the Dalton Cemetery.  The service will start at 10 A.M. Monday, May 26.  The guest speaker is Pete Morgan. He joined the United States Marine Corps in December 1973 and retired November of 1994 as Company Gunnery / First Sergeant.

The American Legion Mintken-Davison Post 0301, Sons of the American Legion Post 0301 and American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the service. Rain Location will be at the Legion Hall.

A Memorial Day Service is planned for Potter. The service will be held 10 a.m. at Prairie West Church, then at the cemetery.

In Lodgepole, the service will be held at 10 a.m. at the cemetery. The service will include a special speaker, placing of a wreath, the National Anthem and the playing of TAPS.

Sidney's Memorial Day Services at Veterans Memorial Park, Greenwood Cemetery were cancelled due to the weather forecast.

The Invocation will be given by Pastor Brenda Pfeifly, followed by the National Anthem.

Guest speaker is Dennis Tuzicka, Vice Commander of American Legion Post No. 17.

Laying of the Wreath will be conducted by Phyllis Tuzicka. God Bless America will be played, followed by the Honor Guard salute and playing of Taps by U.S. Navy recruit David E. Brauer.

The Benediction will be given by Pastor Brenda Pfiefly, followed by special announcements and the closing.

The program is presented by the VFW Post 610, American Legion Post No. 17 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 40.

A special service will be held at 2 p.m. this Sunday, May 25, at Berea Lutheran Church cemetery. The color guard will be in attendance.  Following the service, ice cream and cake will be served in the church basement. All are welcome!

The Chappell community Memorial Day Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday May 26, at the Chappell Cemetery. The service will be presented by the Area Veterans Group. Everyone is welcome. Volunteers are needed to help place and take in flags 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Peetz Community is having a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at the Peetz Cemetery. The service will honor John Harris, the latest Peetz veteran laid to rest. Poppy wreaths an flags will be planted at the cemetery. A coffee and rolls social time at the Community Center is planned for after the service.
