Severe storm brings golf ball-sized hail to Goshen County
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — A severe thunderstorm tracked through parts of eastern Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle Friday evening, prompting an extended warning from the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.
As of 8:49 p.m. MDT, the storm was located near Southern Hills Estates, just west of Torrington, moving east at 30 mph. Emergency management reported golf ball-sized hail north of Veteran, with the storm carrying the potential for hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.
The warning remains in effect until 9:15 p.m. for northwestern Scotts Bluff County in Nebraska, as well as southwestern Sioux and east central Goshen counties in Wyoming.
Communities in the storm’s path include Torrington, Morrill, Lyman, Yoder, Henry, Huntley, Veteran, and the Torrington Municipal Airport, as well as the Goshen County Fairgrounds.
The National Weather Service urged residents to seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Large hail can cause significant damage to vehicles, roofs, windows, and siding, while strong winds may bring down tree limbs and power lines.
