FAIRBURY, Neb -- A section of E Street in Fairbury is closed after part of a building in the 600 block partially collapsed over the weekend. Mayor Kelly Davis says he was notified of the situation and met with the building owner, a city employee, and Councilman Brad Kuzelka.

After inspecting the structure located just south of the Chinese Restaurant, officials determined the rest of the building was unstable and could collapse further. The area was quickly secured with fencing and signage, and E Street was closed to protect public safety.

Mayor Davis praised city crews from the water, street, waste water, line, and park departments for their fast and coordinated response. He also thanked Bob Elgert with EBS Construction and Zack Schacht with Westin Packaged Meats for assisting with fencing and signs.

Davis says the remainder of the building will be taken down as soon as possible, but the city will consult legal counsel to ensure it’s handled properly. He’s asking residents to be patient during the process.

We will have more on this story this week.
